After you set the variables in Reel Ear, the application will produce a random musical phrase based on your variables - that's the "call" part. You then either sing back or repeat back the phrase with your instrument - that's the "response" part.

What's the difference between the trial version and the full version?
The two versions are exactly the same as far as how they function. The trial version, however, will only work for 10 days, to allow you to try out Reel Ear and see if it's the right solution for your ear training. If you want to use it for longer, then you need to buy the full version.

Reel Ear is a random melody generator used for musical ear training. You define a variety of variables and the application plays an unlimited amount of random melodies based on your variables. Just by selecting a few notes and defining three or four different variables, the amount of possible melodies that Reel Ear can generate skyrockets into the millions.

This little program only reads the serial number from your computer's hard drive and transfers that number to your computer's clipboard. We use that number to create your personal license that unlocks your full version of Reel Ear.

Why did you design a random melody generator?
Other ear training programs frequently use prerecorded exercises, which means that you can easily memorize them - if you are playing from memory, you are no longer training your ear. Because Reel Ear generates random melodies based on your variables, it's impossible to memorize the melodies; also the number of possible musical phrases available to you quickly becomes astronomical as you add in more and more variables. In other words, you can never outgrow Reel Ear.

When I buy Reel Ear, why can't I immediately unlock my trial version?
We need to balance the customer's purchasing experience with theft prevention through software piracy. In order to do that, we have chosen to lock the full version of Reel Ear to each customer's computer, therefore making it very, very difficult for a software pirate to simply buy a full version of Reel Ear and then to begin to distribute it through illegal channels.

Encrypting our software and locking each full version to a customer's computer is the same as owning a butcher shop and keeping the meat behind the counter during the day, and locking the shop's doors at night - it's how we try and keep a few bad apples from stealing.

How long does it take from the time I buy the full version of Reel Ear to the time I can unlock it?
We make every possible effort to get your personal key to unlock Reel Ear as quickly as possible. Usually it won't take more than a day to receive your key once you have sent us your computer license number, however, if we are really busy or it's a holiday in Spain, it could take up to 48 hours.

The trial version of Reel Ear comes "zipped" for easy internet distribution. To open a zipped file, if you don't already have a zip file program, all you need to do is download one of the many free programs available widely on the internet and follow their instructions. Will my license still work if I need to reformat my hard drive?
Yes! We allow two instances of changes in your hardware configuration with each license, so if you need to change your CPU, reformat your hard drive, etc...you won't have any problem. In the normal life of a computer most people never make two major hardware changes, so your license should work as long as you keep using your computer.

Of course more your ear improves, the more you can hear the music, so if you keep at it, you'll find yourself getting better and better - and you'll start experiencing music more and more fully. After about 6 months of Reel Ear, you'll probably hear new musical details in songs that you have been listening to all your life!
